Why Ivermectin should not be used to treat COVID-19

What is Ivermectin:

Ivermectin is an anthelmintic (anti-parasite) belonging from the Anthelmintic class mainly used to treat infections caused by certain parasites.

Some infections that are mainly cured by Ivermectin are

  • Ascariasis
  • Scabies
  • Head lice
  • Rosacea

Ivermectin is commonly sold under the names Stromectol, Sklice, Aveidoxia, Felvot and Iverlex.  Ivermectin is usually not sold over the counter and is only available on doctor’s prescription. The salt has an ability to treat fungal infections in the body and treat certain parasitic roundworm infections. Ivermectin is available separately for human and animal use.

Side effects of Ivermectin:

Ivermectin is safe for humans in a particular quantity, however there are a number of side effects that ivermectin can cause. Some of them are listed below.

  • Dizziness
  • Muscle pain
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Cold and Flu

However, excessive amounts of Ivermectin can be seriously dangerous for health. Excessive amounts of ivermectin in the body may cause itching, swelling and rashes.

Why Ivermectin should not be used to cure COVID-19:

The European Medicine Agency reviewed the use of ivermectin to treat COVID-19 virus but did not get satisfactory evidence to use it as a cure against COVID-19 virus. Ivermectin is made with the purpose of curing fungal infections and parasites in animals and to treat skin conditions such as Rosacea.

Studies revealed that Ivermectin can block the recurrence of  SARS-COV-2 (VIrus that causes COVID-19 virus at higher Ivermectin concentration. Some studies reported a benefit of the use of Ivermectin where at the same time a number of studies showed no benefit. The European Medicine Agency therefore concluded that Ivermectin for now, should not be used to cure COVID-19 outside controlled trials.
